Teenager Faces Jail After Fatal Crash Claims Lives of Two Schoolgirls

A 19-year-old teenager, Idrees Ibn-Haroon from Stockport, is facing the possibility of a jail sentence after causing a fatal crash that took the lives of two schoolgirls in Disley, Cheshire. The tragic incident occurred when Haroon, driving his mother’s Vauxhall Corsa, lost control and collided with an oncoming Ford Fiesta while speeding around a bend at 3 am.

The victims, Mariah Hussein (16) and her 13-year-old cousin Kiara O’Lisa, both from Manchester, were in the back of the Corsa and suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Mariah’s sister, Saira Hussein (21), also in the Corsa, survived with non-life-threatening injuries. The 20-year-old woman driving the Fiesta sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized, reported Manchester Evening News.

Haroon, a friend of Saira, suffered spinal fractures, superficial wounds to his hands and wrists, and bruising to his hip, chest, and leg. He passed breath and drug tests at the scene but admitted to coming around a corner too fast, causing the loss of control. Haroon pleaded guilty to two charges of causing death by careless driving at Warrington Magistrates Court.

Due to insufficient sentencing powers, the case was transferred to Chester Crown Court, where Haroon faces the possibility of a custodial sentence. He was released on bail, but the magistrates warned him about the potential for imprisonment. The maximum sentence for causing death by careless driving is five years in jail.

The court heard that the collision occurred on a left-hand bend with a speed limit change from 40 to 30 mph. CCTV footage captured the incident, and Haroon was arrested at the scene. The sentencing guidelines emphasized the aggravating factors of speed and failure to consider weather conditions, leading to the tragic loss of two young lives.

Haroon, with no previous convictions, entered an early guilty plea, and his lawyer requested credit for this. The magistrates imposed an interim driving ban and ordered a probation report before sentencing at the crown court on January 15. Mariah’s family expressed their heartbreak in a statement, while Kiara’s family remembered her as a smart and outgoing girl with a radiant smile.
