Jon Kay Shares Breaking News on Air ‘DHL Cargo Plane Crashes Near Vilnius Airport’

BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay delivered breaking news during a live broadcast, revealing details of a tragic cargo plane crash. According to the Manchester Evening News, Seated alongside co-host Sally Nugent, Jon informed viewers, “Some breaking news this morning because we’re hearing that a DHL cargo plane has crashed near Vilnius airport in Lithuania. Police say the plane came down as it was coming in to land. One person has been killed and three others have been injured.”

As images of the crash appeared on screen, Jon continued, “These pictures we’ve been getting in show a large police presence and ambulance persons nearby. Several streets have been cordoned off, and firefighters have been spraying water onto a large building that is surrounded by smoke. We’ll bring you more details when you get them”, reported by the Express.

The somber update came during an otherwise lighthearted episode of the morning show, which included a segment highlighting a care home brewing project. Last week, Jon experienced a humorous moment on air when a slight misstep led to an out-of-sync exchange with co-presenter Nina Warhurst.

While discussing how residents of a Bristol care home had created their own beer, Jon remarked, “A group of care home residents in Bristol are taking a glass half full approach to life and it’s all down to beer, sounds good.” Nina, either reading ahead or ad-libbing, overlapped with Jon, announcing, “Yes, the Hoppiness Project got them growing hops in the garden of their care homes to turn into their own pale ale.”

The light mistake was met with smiles, as the duo quickly moved on to cover the heartwarming story. The segment featured care home residents visiting a brewery to see their beer, Backyard Bounty, being made. One resident humorously quipped that it “wasn’t as good as northern beer” but appreciated the process.

The care home’s activities coordinator praised the initiative, sharing how it positively impacted the residents. The beer is set to be available in pubs across the country soon, a prospect Jon and Nina applauded. Jon said, “What a good idea,” to which Nina replied, “Absolutely, everyone’s a winner.”

Balancing moments of gravity with community-focused stories, the episode reflected the breadth of BBC Breakfast’s coverage, keeping viewers informed and engaged.
