Prince Harry’s honor under threat as petition reaches milestone, Pat Tillman’s mother

Prince Harry’s latest honor seems to be under threat as Americans have taken a stance against him. The Duke of Sussex has faced a major setback in the US, with a petition to stop him from receiving an award reaching 50,000 signatures.

The petition gained momentum after Pat Tillman’s mother, Mary, criticized the decision to give the award named after her late son to Prince Harry. Tillman, who left a successful NFL career to enlist as an Army Ranger in 2002, served in Iraq and Afghanistan before being killed by friendly fire in 2004. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his bravery.

Mary, Tilman’s mom, said: “I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award. There are recipients that are far more fitting. There are individuals working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans.”

“These individuals do not have the money, resources, connections, or privilege that Prince Harry has. I feel that those types of individuals should be recognized.” The petition says “Awarding this honor to someone who does not reflect the award’s intent diminishes its value and disrespects Tillman’s memory.”

The organization said: “ESPN, with the support of the Tillman Foundation, is honoring Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, specifically for the work of The Invictus Games Foundation as it celebrates its 10th year promoting healing through the power of sport for military service members and veterans around the world. “While we understand not everyone will agree with all honorees selected for any award, The Invictus Games Foundation does incredible work and ESPN believes this is a cause worth celebrating.”

The controversy centers on the decision by ESPN, with the support of the Tillman Foundation, to honor Prince Harry. The organization stated, “ESPN, with the support of the Tillman Foundation, is honoring Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, specifically for the work of The Invictus Games Foundation as it celebrates its 10th year promoting healing through the power of sport for military service members and veterans around the world.”

Despite his numerous accolades, Harry seems to have failed to win over many Americans, who argue that he does not deserve this particular honor. The backlash highlights a growing sentiment that the Duke of Sussex has not earned the recognition associated with the award named after Tillman, a genuine war hero. The situation underscores the complexities and challenges Prince Harry faces as he navigates his life and public roles in the United States.
