Sarah Ferguson Applauds King Charles and Kate Middleton’s Bravery in Sharing Cancer Battles: ‘Family Unity is Extraordinary’
Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has recently expressed her admiration for King Charles and Kate Middleton’s courage in sharing their cancer battles with the world. During an appearance on Good Morning Britain with Susanna Reid and Martin Lewis, the 64-year-old royal commended the King and the Princess of Wales for their bravery in opening up about their health struggles, emphasizing the importance of “family unity” during difficult times, via OK!.
“I am so so proud of the King on becoming the royal patron of Cancer Research UK, getting out there and talking to all these people, he gives everyone that wonderful feeling that they are being listened to, I thought it was very brave of him to do that,” Ferguson said. “The lovely Princess Catherine doing the video was so brave, family unity is an extraordinary thing and I am honestly so proud and I am sending them lots of love and lots of support, we all need to rally together.”
King Charles returned to public duties in April after announcing his cancer diagnosis in February, while Kate Middleton has yet to resume forward-facing engagements following her own cancer revelation in March. In a video posted on Instagram, the Princess of Wales thanked supporters for their messages of support and understanding while she recovered from major abdominal surgery and began preventive chemotherapy treatment.
Ferguson, who recently battled breast cancer and malignant melanoma herself, emphasized the significance of supporting one another during challenging times. “All these years I’ve been thinking, ‘Am I good enough? Am I this, am I that? Do I get my finances right? Do I do this?’. And actually suddenly now with a mastectomy and then with malignant melanoma, every single day, it’s not a wake-up call, it’s now a new normal,” she shared.
The Duchess of York also stressed the importance of regular health screenings, particularly mammograms, encouraging others not to be afraid to get tested. “Honestly, 1.2 million mammograms are not being picked up. The people are not going for their mammograms, they’re not being tested. They need to be tested, they can be tested, and don’t be frightened,” she said. Her message resonated with host Susanna Reid, who revealed that she had recently undergone a mammogram after hearing Ferguson’s advice.
Amid reports of tension between King Charles and Prince Andrew over the latter’s residence at the Royal Lodge, Ferguson maintained that she doesn’t get “involved in brothers’ discussions,” stating, “I tend not to get involved in brothers’ discussions and I think that’s the best, most safe place to be, is to let the brothers discuss it between themselves.”
Ferguson, who lives in the Royal Lodge with her ex-husband Prince Andrew, also discussed her upcoming novel, “A Woman of Intrigue,” describing it as “saucy and s*xy” and likening it to the popular television series “Bridgerton.” She expressed her desire to have a cameo in the show, suggesting that her character, Lady Penelope, should have a red-haired friend like herself.
The Duchess of York’s battle with cancer has prompted her to embrace her true self and encourage others to do the same. In a recent interview with Hello magazine, she revealed that her father, Major Ronald Ferguson, had previously called her a “bore” and told her to limit her “huge personality.” However, the late Queen Elizabeth II had reassured her, saying, “Sarah just being yourself is enough and it’s good enough.”
