Police Investigation Underway After Alleged Assault on Linesman at Anglesey Football Match

An incident at a football match in Anglesey has prompted a police investigation after a linesman was reportedly assaulted. The event occurred during the game between Amlwch Town FC and Penrhyndeudraeth FC on the afternoon of Saturday, April 27.

According to officials, the North Wales Police have been called in to investigate the matter and are currently seeking information from witnesses. The alleged assault, captured on video and circulating on social media, has drawn attention and concern from the football community.

The North Wales Coast Football Association (NWCFA) acknowledged the incident, stating, “The North Wales Coast Football Association (NWCFA) are aware of a video circulating on social media in relation to an incident at Amlwch Town FC. This incident is currently being investigated by the police, which the NWCFA has requested details.”

The NWCFA has urged the public to refrain from sharing the video or commenting online, as it could potentially affect the ongoing investigation. “Whilst this is an ongoing investigation, we would urge people not to share the video or comment as this could impact any investigation,” the Association added, promising a thorough investigation upon the conclusion of the police inquiry.

A police spokesperson provided further details, saying, “We were called shortly after 4pm on Saturday, April 27th to report an assault during a football match in Amlwch. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. We would ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist us to contact us via our website or by calling 101 and quoting reference 24000385680.”

The match itself, which Penrhyndeudraeth FC won decisively with a score of 0-8, was overshadowed by the altercation. Penrhyndeudraeth FC addressed the incident on their Facebook page, expressing regret over the situation. The statement read: “A fantastic result and performance from the lads today. Unfortunately, the game was marred by an incident which occurred approximately 15 minutes into the game when a Penrhyn player, acting as a voluntary linesman, was assaulted.”

The club has chosen not to comment further but has expressed its intention to support the player involved as the police handle the case. Similarly, Amlwch Town FC has also refrained from making detailed comments due to the ongoing investigations, stating, “Given that there are further investigations pending, it would not be appropriate for us to comment at this time.”

The football community and local authorities are now awaiting the results of the police investigation to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate course of action.
