Mum’s Warning After 22-Month-Old Son Killed by Falling Mirror in Devastating Home Accident

A mum has opened up about the most devastating moment of her life after her 22-month-old son tragically died in a freak accident involving a mirror at home. Lindsay Dewey, a mum-of-three from Idaho, shared her heartbreaking story on Instagram in the hopes that no other parent has to go through the same nightmare.

Lindsay explained that her youngest child, Reed, was playing near a large mirror when the unimaginable happened. She believes he may have been pulling on one of his suction cup bowls, stuck to the mirror, trying to pry it off. That’s when the heavy mirror came crashing down on him.

“To make a long story short, apparently Reed had one of his suction cup bowls and stuck it on the mirror and was pulling it ‘back and forth’ to pry it off (we’re assuming) and he pulled the mirror down on himself,” she shared.

Lindsay, who had been in the kitchen making dinner at the time, didn’t hear him playing with the mirror until it was too late. “I never even heard him playing by/with the mirror – until I heard it fall and then within 5 seconds I lifted it off of him.”

Although Reed didn’t pass away immediately, the impact left him with a fractured skull and what Lindsay described as a “severe traumatic brain injury”. At first, she thought he might just be in shock, but very quickly realised something was seriously wrong.

“Never did we expect that it would be so serious that he wouldn’t survive it,” she said, recalling how medics arrived within minutes but were sadly unable to save her little boy.

In the days following Reed’s death, Lindsay made the brave decision to speak out publicly. The mirror, she said, wasn’t designed to be mounted or anchored to the wall and was far too heavy for her children to lift — which is what makes the accident so unimaginable.

Typically, an accent chair would have been placed in front of the mirror, acting as a barrier, but it had just been moved to clean up after their dog had an accident. “We both are still in complete shock that this is what took our baby from us,” she wrote. “We’re only sharing this because we don’t want this happening to anybody.”

Lindsay admitted she feared backlash online, but said even harsh comments would be worth it if her story could help save another child’s life. In a tribute post, she shared a photo of Reed, writing: “Mommy misses you so badly and I’m so sorry this happened to you my perfect baby boy.”

Since the tragedy, her Instagram following has grown rapidly, but Lindsay made it clear she’s not in it for fame or influence. “I’m just your average mama of three, homemaker, fire wife, who is obsessed with her family, living in Idaho,” she wrote, shutting down any suggestion she’s chasing online attention.

Her message is painfully clear: check your home, anchor your furniture, and don’t assume accidents like this can’t happen — because in her words, “we never thought it would happen to us either.”
