Mother Urges Ban on Slushies for Children After Toddler’s Severe Reaction

Within half an hour of indulging in the drink, Angus’ condition deteriorated dramatically in another store, rendering him unconscious and prompting his mother to fear for his very life.
Describing the terrifying moment, Victoria recounted how Angus suddenly went “limp and stone cold,” prompting an urgent medical response as paramedics worked frantically to stabilize him. The subsequent hospitalization of Angus revealed that the slushy had induced a condition known as glycerol toxicity, leaving the young boy in a state akin to intoxication, told Wales Online.
Medical staff at Glasgow Children’s Hospital informed Victoria that the chemical component in the slushy responsible for preventing it from freezing had dangerously impacted Angus’ blood sugar levels. The Food Standard Agency (FSA) had previously issued guidance in August 2023, advising against the sale of slush-ice drinks containing glycerol to children under the age of four due to the potential risks.
High levels of glycerol exposure can lead to severe health implications, including shock, hypoglycemia, and loss of consciousness. This guidance underscores the potential dangers associated with the consumption of such beverages by young children.
Reflecting on the incident, Victoria shared that her other children had consumed slushies as a treat in the past without issue, making Angus’ adverse reaction both shocking and unprecedented. The initial symptoms of discomfort expressed by Angus while shopping were initially dismissed by Victoria as fatigue or a minor ailment, but the situation escalated rapidly, culminating in a full-blown seizure that left Victoria in a state of panic and fear for her son’s life.
In the aftermath of this traumatic experience, Victoria has become an advocate for greater awareness and regulation of slushy sales to children. She argues for a complete ban on slushies or, at a minimum, clear warning signs indicating the potential risks for children under four.
