Young Mother ‘s Tragic Passing from Colon Cancer, Initially Misdiagnosed as Minor Symptoms
0Mia Brehme, a 24-year-old mother from Leigh, tragically passed away on November 22 after a short but intense struggle with advanced colon cancer. Mia, initially mistaking her symptoms for piles due to bleeding during toilet visits, received a devastating diagnosis just four months before her death.
A colonoscopy in July revealed she had stage 4 colon cancer, with secondary cancer affecting her liver and lungs. Alicia Brehme, Mia’s sister, shared with the MEN the shock and rapid progression of Mia’s illness. She recounted how, despite initial hopes for more time, Mia’s condition declined swiftly.
Just a day after being told she had only a few days left, Mia’s health worsened significantly. She became quiet and weak, contrasting with her usual vibrant personality. However, just a week before her passing, Mia still exhibited her characteristic cheerfulness and chattiness, leading her family to hope she would make it to Christmas.
Colon cancer, or colorectal cancer, involves uncontrolled cell growth in the colon or rectum, sometimes starting from polyps that can become cancerous over time. Early detection through screening is crucial for effective treatment.
Mia underwent a procedure to fit a stoma bag due to a tumor blocking her passage, followed by intense chemotherapy. Her condition, however, rapidly deteriorated, and she spent her final weeks in the Wigan and Leigh Hospice in Hindley.
Her passing has left a profound impact, particularly on her three-year-old daughter, Kyla-Mae. Kyla-Mae still longs to see her mother, whom she now refers to as a “princess in the sky,” and struggles to understand her absence.
Alicia described Mia as a vivacious and fearless young woman who loved life. She was known for her outgoing and fun-loving nature, never shying away from being herself. Mia cherished time with her daughter, nephews, friends, and animals.
Mia’s story is a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones. Her family’s experience underscores the devastating impact of cancer and the need for awareness and early detection.
