Kate Winslet Opens Up About “Awkward” Behind-the-Scenes Moments on Titanic

Kate Winslet, who portrayed Rose Dewitt Bukater in the iconic 1997 movie Titanic, has candidly shared some “awkward” experiences from the set while discussing her latest film Lee. During a panel interview, the 48-year-old actress reflected on one of the movie’s most memorable scenes: Rose floating on a door while Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, drowns in the freezing Atlantic waters.

“Well, that was quite an awkward tank … because, to burst the bubble, it was waist height at that time,” Winslet said in her conversation with People Magazine.

She humorously recounted the less-than-glamorous aspects of filming the scene. “So, first of all, I was regularly like, ‘Can I just go for a pee?’ And then I get up, get off the door, walk to the edge of the tank, sort of 20 feet away, and I literally have to fling my leg over and climb up and come and get back on the door again. It’s terrible.”

She added with a laugh, “Anyway, yeah. So it was waist-high. Leo, I’m afraid to say, was kneeling down. I shouldn’t be saying anyway. Jimmy Cameron’s [the director] gonna be ringing me.” She also mentioned the impressive “infinity tank” that added to the scene’s visual effect.

Earlier this year, Winslet shared another behind-the-scenes moment from Titanic, this time focusing on the iconic “I’m flying” scene. Speaking to Vanity Fair, she recalled the less-than-romantic reality of filming the scene where Rose and Jack stand at the ship’s bow.

“We kept doing this kiss, and I’ve got a lot of pale makeup on, and I would have to do our makeup checks — on both of us, between takes — and I would end up looking as though I’d been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me,” Winslet revealed.

She jokingly added, “And he just looked like there was a bit missing from his face because there was this big pale bit from all my makeup getting onto him.”

Winslet’s panel interview coincides with the recent release of her latest movie, Lee, which hit screens on September 13.
