The First Minister has been cautioned that his position on the US President could lead to severe economic consequences, including potential tariffs on key Scottish exports like whisky and salmon. Tory MSP Murdo Fraser urged the Scottish leader to avoid “grandstanding on matters he has no control over.”
The party’s economy spokesman warned, “Some of the rhetoric risks angering a President who could turn round and impose tariffs on Scotland’s most iconic products. That would have a devastating effect on sectors such as whisky, salmon, and cashmere”, reported the Sun.
Despite the concerns, senior SNP figures have doubled down on their call for the withdrawal of the US President’s invitation for a state visit to the UK, which could include a stay at Balmoral. The invitation, issued in a letter from the King, was personally delivered to the White House last week by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Tensions escalated following US President and Vice President JD Vance’s treatment of Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, during his visit to Washington DC.
SNP foreign affairs spokesman Stephen Gethins condemned the US administration’s stance, stating, “It was an utterly grotesque way to treat the leader of a nation under siege. If the US is hostile to Ukraine, they should not be welcomed.” However, opposition parties have criticized the SNP’s response, urging them to act more diplomatically.
Scottish Labour’s external affairs spokesman Neil Bibby said, “This defining moment requires serious leadership, not childish attacks putting party politics ahead of peace.” Echoing the call for restraint, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton urged for “calm and measured diplomacy.” With concerns mounting over economic fallout and political tensions, the debate over the US President’s state visit continues to divide Scottish leaders.
