Good Morning Britain Star Spills the Truth About Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan made a headline-grabbing return to Good Morning Britain earlier this month, and it didn’t take long for the drama to bubble up — both on and off screen. Back on set for the first time in nearly four years, Morgan wasted no time acknowledging the moment with his usual flair: “Hang on, are we just going to ignore the fact I haven’t been here for 1,453 days?”
He rejoined former co-host Susanna Reid and Ed Balls for a segment discussing Donald Trump, and it was classic Piers from the off. He went in for a hug with Reid (she wasn’t having it), got a warmer response from Balls, and instantly brought back the energy that defined his often controversial stint on the show, reported the Manchester Evening News.
Morgan originally quit GMB in 2021 after a dramatic on-air walk-off during a clash with weather presenter Alex Beresford. That row came after Morgan’s comments dismissing claims made by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in their bombshell Oprah interview — comments that sparked more than 50,000 complaints to Ofcom.
So, how do his former colleagues feel about seeing him back in the GMB studio? Charlotte Hawkins, who’s been part of the show since its 2014 launch, wasn’t on shift that day — but she was watching from home. Speaking to Woman magazine, the 49-year-old presenter shared her thoughts, and it sounds like she’s still on friendly terms with Morgan despite the drama.
“I wasn’t in that day so I didn’t get to see him in person but I was watching from home and he certainly livened things up, as usual,” she said. “I’m lucky that Piers is a friend so I get to see him on a regular basis anyway.”
During his return, Morgan chatted about a recent call with Donald Trump, claiming the former US President was in “upbeat mood” when they spoke — just before that now-infamous clash with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. According to Morgan, their friendship is a mix of chaos and comedy. “We’ve had screaming matches,” he said, “and then we’re laughing an hour later.”
As the segment wrapped up, Morgan couldn’t resist throwing in a jab at Ed Balls’ choice of wardrobe, telling him to ditch the tie. Balls replied with a dig of his own: “Piers, as you know, I always do what the editor wants.” That prompted Morgan to quip, “Or what Susanna tells you to do, bad for her brand if you take the tie off.” Reid responded with a grin, insisting it had nothing to do with her — before cheekily suggesting he might want to walk out again.
While the moment got fans buzzing, Hawkins was quick to bring it all back down to earth. For her, the real standouts on the show aren’t always the big names. “We are really lucky that we have such a broad breadth of guests,” she said. “But actually, for me, the guests that usually stand out the most are ordinary people that we speak to who do extraordinary things.”
