The 77-year-old Grammy-winning music icon revealed on Sunday night that he has lost his eyesight following a battle with a “severe” infection. The heartfelt announcement came during his address to guests at London’s Dominion Theatre after the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, for which he composed the original score.
“As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed it,” he shared with the audience, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The legendary artist credited his husband, David Furnish, for being a pillar of support during this difficult period. “To my husband, who’s been my rock, because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight, so it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it,” he said in a video shared on TikTok. Despite his vision loss, he expressed appreciation for the musical’s vibrant sound, adding, “And, boy, it sounded good tonight! OK! Thank you for coming!”
The premiere of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical was a star-studded charity event attended by notable figures such as Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Lily Collins, and Elizabeth Hurley. The performance features Tony nominee Vanessa Williams in the iconic role of Miranda Priestly.
This isn’t the first time the music legend has spoken about his vision challenges. In September, he disclosed suffering from “limited vision in one eye” due to a severe infection he endured over the summer. At the time, he shared an optimistic update, stating, “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”
He also expressed gratitude for the unwavering care he has received. “I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.”
Despite his recent health struggles, the artist remains committed to celebrating his work and supporting the performances he has contributed to, demonstrating resilience and an enduring passion for music and the arts.
