Dad Dies After Stadium Fall, Chooses to Turn Off Life Support: ‘He Wished to Die Instead’

Simon Oakley, 59, tragically passed away after a severe fall during halftime at St. Mary’s Stadium, where he was watching his favorite team, the Saints. The father of four fell down ten concrete steps on October 7, sustaining two spinal fractures that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He was immediately rushed from the stadium to Southampton General Hospital and later transferred to a neuroscience intensive care ward, according to Daily Echo.

Medics informed Simon that he would be dependent on a ventilator and require a wheelchair for life. Only able to communicate by sticking his tongue out, Simon expressed his desire to die instead of living with such severe limitations.

During the inquest at Winchester Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that Simon was carefully assessed over three weeks to ensure he was capable of making this life-altering decision. Doctors ultimately concluded that it would be unlawful to continue treatment against his wishes, leading to the decision to turn off his ventilator.

On November 13, Simon’s family and friends gathered to say goodbye, and he peacefully passed away 30 minutes after life support was withdrawn. Among his visitors was Southampton legend Francis Benali, who came to offer support in Simon’s final moments. In a final act of generosity, Simon donated his organs, providing help and hope to others in need.
