Jay Slater’s Cause of Death Confirmed After Body Found in Tenerife

The body found in Tenerife on Monday has been officially identified as that of missing British teenager Jay Slater. The 19-year-old’s death was confirmed by the Canary Islands Higher Court of Justice on Tuesday, after fingerprints matched those of Slater. The court stated that his death was caused by “trauma consistent with a fall in a rocky area.”

The body was discovered near the village of Masca, alongside Jay’s clothes and possessions, confirming his identity. Charity LBT Global previously reported that the remains were found close to his last known location.

The Spanish Civil Guard suggested that Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, could have fallen in the steep and inaccessible area where he was discovered. The search for Slater had been extensive, involving helicopters, drones, and search dogs, but was called off at the end of June.

Lucy Law, a friend of Jay Slater and the last person to speak to him during a phone call on June 17, posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram following the news. She wrote, “Honestly lost for words. Always the happiest and most smiley person in the room, you was (sic) one of a kind Jay and you’ll be missed more than you know. I’m sure you’ll ‘have your dancing shoes polished and ready’ waiting for us all. We all love you buddy. Fly high.”

Jay Slater had attended the NRG music festival with two friends before he disappeared. His last known location was the Rural de Teno Park in the north of the Canary Island, approximately an 11-hour walk from his accommodation. After a night out, he traveled to an Airbnb in Masca, but the two men who rented the property were later deemed “not relevant” to the case.

The tragic discovery brings a heartbreaking end to the search for Jay Slater, an apprentice bricklayer whose vibrant spirit touched many. His death leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, and his memory will be cherished by friends and family.
