Young Dad, 21, Warns ‘Vaping Isn’t Worth Your Life’ After Being Left in Coma from Overuse at Work

James Johnson, a 21-year-old father from Blackpool, Lancashire, faced a life-changing ordeal after his vaping habit left him fighting for his life. Rushed to intensive care when he began vomiting blood, James fell into a two-week coma, battling bilateral pneumonia caused by vape chemicals infiltrating his lungs.

As a bouncer working long night shifts, James turned to vaping for “something to do.” He regularly used £12 IVG 2400 vapes, finishing one every two days. However, his habit came with devastating consequences.

After waking from the coma, James spent three months in the hospital with a collapsed lung. Doctors warned him that if he continued vaping, he wouldn’t live past 40. Determined to turn his life around, James now hopes to raise awareness of vaping’s dangers, especially following the death of Hollyoaks actor Paul Danan at 46, who suffered respiratory failure from excessive vaping, reported by Lancs Live.

“Having a vape is not worth your life,” James said. “Read up about what you are smoking before you smoke it. Don’t think that because of your age, it won’t happen to you. I was only 20 years old, and I nearly lost my life.”

James recounted the terrifying night in May 2024 when he suddenly began throwing up blood. The next thing he remembers is waking up in the hospital, confused and weak, after his heart had stopped.

“I didn’t even recognize my partner, Charlotte, or remember that we had a daughter, Harper-Mai,” James shared. He was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, which meant both of his lungs were critically affected. Doctors discovered that each time James vaped, chemicals were leaching into his lungs, filling them with pus and causing severe damage.

“They kept telling my partner it was touch and go,” he recalled.

James started vaping in 2023, during long shifts that often stretched 17 hours. He now regrets how little attention he paid to the potential health risks. “It’s not spoken about—the problems of vaping—it’s brushed off,” he said.

While recovering, James is urging others to take vaping dangers seriously. “If I go back to vaping or smoking, or I don’t look after my body, then I won’t make it past 40. To be honest, I’m glad I found out now because it could have happened in 10 or 20 years, and my body wouldn’t have been fit enough to survive it.”

James hopes his story serves as a warning to others: “Think about what you’re putting into your body—it’s not worth your life.”
