Wife Recalls Heartbreaking Final Call from Husband Before His Sudden Death: ‘I Can’t Stand Up’

Ashley Morley is grappling with the sudden loss of her beloved husband, Billy Morley, who tragically passed away during a stag do in Liverpool. Just one hour before his untimely death, Billy called Ashley, expressing feelings of anxiety—a call that now haunts her.

Billy, 45, a devoted husband and father, was found dead in a hotel room on Stanley Street on June 30, having suffered a massive heart attack. The builder from Cleator Moor had been in Liverpool for what was meant to be a joyful weekend with friends. He left behind his five-year-old daughter April, and step-son, Jack, 13.

Ashley, 36, shared her devastation with the Liverpool Echo, recalling their last conversation. “He called me in the morning and said he felt really anxious,” she said. “We both suffer from anxiety, but it’s usually nothing to worry about.” She explained that they had always checked in on each other when apart, and the call seemed routine at first.

“I spoke to him around 1:30 a.m. when he’d gotten back to the hotel. He sounded drunk but fine,” Ashley recounted. “I told him to get some rest because we were going on holiday soon.” But the next morning, Billy called again, expressing more severe anxiety. “He said, ‘I’ve not slept, I’m really anxious.’”

Ashley offered to arrange an early train home, but just as they were ending the call, Billy told his friend, “I can’t stand up.” Moments later, she was unable to reach him.

Frantically, Ashley tried calling back, but there was no answer. “I messaged him saying, ‘You’re worrying me,’” she recalled. Soon after, her best friend’s husband, Ryan, called with devastating news: Billy was with paramedics. “I asked, ‘Is he dead?’ The phone call still doesn’t feel real.”

After 45 agonizing minutes, Ryan confirmed the worst: Billy had suffered a massive heart attack and was gone.

Reflecting on their life together, Ashley said, “We had a very good marriage, he was my person. Some people never get what me and Billy had, and I’m so pleased I got that with him. He was an amazing dad, and April was his world.”

As she navigates life without Billy, Ashley takes comfort in the love they shared and the memories of her husband’s warmth and kindness. “He was always smiling, always helping others. He was an all-round lovely person.”
