UK Weather: ‘Gales and Frost Collide’ as February Brings Wild Weather Divide
0
February 2025 will bring a mix of stormy weather in the northwest and calmer but chilly conditions in the south and east. While parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England brace for heavy rain and strong winds, the rest of the country will see drier, settled weather with cold nights and foggy mornings.
Sunday will start with lingering rain in northern and western areas, though it will gradually ease off by late morning. Brighter spells will break through in Northern Ireland and western Scotland, but don’t expect it to last—clouds will return later in the day, and with them, strengthening winds.
Further south and east, Sunday will be mostly dry, with sunny spells appearing across central and southern England. However, cloud will increase in Wales and western parts of England, bringing some drizzle later on.
As the evening sets in, northern Scotland will reportedly take the brunt of the worsening weather, with heavy rain and strong winds moving in overnight. Some areas could even see gale-force winds, making for an unsettled start to the week. Meanwhile, southern parts of the country will remain dry but cloudy, with clear breaks in the sky allowing temperatures to drop enough for frost to form in sheltered areas.
Monday will see a big contrast in conditions across the country. Scotland and Northern Ireland will face another wet and windy day, with gusts of up to 60 mph in exposed areas. Rain will spread further inland, affecting parts of western and central Scotland as well as western Northern Ireland.
In contrast, southern and eastern England will stay mostly dry, with sunny spells breaking through at times. While temperatures won’t be particularly warm, these areas will escape the worst of the stormy conditions.
By Tuesday, rain will move southward, but it will lose strength as it spreads, meaning many areas will only see light showers or drizzle. By Wednesday, a change in weather is expected as high pressure builds, leading to calmer and drier conditions across most of the UK.
For the middle of February, this high-pressure system is expected to keep the south and east settled, with light winds and colder nights bringing frost and fog. Meanwhile, the north and west will continue to see more unsettled weather, with rain and milder temperatures arriving in waves. There’s a small chance of colder easterly winds developing later in the month, but for now, it remains uncertain.
As February progresses, the northwest vs. southeast split in weather will become even clearer. The north and west will face frequent bouts of wet and windy weather, while southern areas will stay drier but colder, with clear nights leading to frost and fog.
With temperatures hovering near average, expect a mix of mild and cold spells throughout the month. While snow is unlikely for most, colder interludes could still bring wintry conditions to some areas. Whether it’s bracing against stormy winds in Scotland or scraping frost off car windows in London, the UK is in for a month of contrasts.
