A recent study by home insurance experts Norton Insurance Brokers has pinpointed the UK cities struggling the most with winter-related home disasters. By analysing online searches for boiler repairs, burst pipes, damp proofing, and roof repairs, the study revealed which areas are hit the hardest—and where a bit of preparation could make all the difference.

Topping the list is Manchester, where 364 searches per 100,000 residents highlight just how much trouble the cold weather is causing. Cardiff isn’t far behind, with 360 searches, and Bristol takes third place with 355, proving that even cities in the south aren’t immune from winter woes.

The full list of affected cities includes Manchester with 364 searches per 100,000 residents, Cardiff with 360 searches, Bristol with 355, Plymouth with 311, Glasgow with 296, Swansea with 280, Leeds with 264, Bradford with 257, Sheffield with 238, and Edinburgh with 237 searches per 100,000 residents.

Winter weather brings heavy rain, snow, and frost, which can cause serious damage to roofs. From missing tiles to clogged gutters and structural weaknesses, homeowners are battling against leaks and water damage. Bristol is the worst-affected city, with 308 searches per 100,000 residents for roofing issues. Cardiff follows closely behind with 291 searches, while Plymouth records 277 searches.

Inspecting the roof for missing tiles and leaks before winter really bites can help prevent bigger issues. Clearing out gutters can prevent blockages and water damage, while arranging a professional inspection can catch hidden problems early.

A failing boiler in the middle of winter is every homeowner’s worst nightmare. Glasgow recorded the highest number of searches for boiler repairs at 100 per 100,000 residents, followed by Coventry with 72 and Hull with 67. Getting a boiler serviced before winter kicks in, bleeding radiators to improve heat circulation, checking boiler pressure, and clearing vents of any obstructions can help ensure a warm home during the cold months. Running the boiler occasionally during milder days can also keep it in working order.

Frozen pipes can lead to cracks and bursts, resulting in serious water damage. Preston is the worst-hit city, with 35 searches per 100,000 residents, followed by Derby and Newcastle with four searches each. Keeping the heating on a low setting during cold spells, even when away, can help prevent freezing. Insulating exposed pipes, knowing where the stopcock is, and considering draining the water system if leaving home for an extended period are also effective preventative measures.

Cold weather and increased indoor humidity create the perfect conditions for damp and mould, which can damage walls and furniture and pose health risks. Belfast leads the way for damp issues, with 51 searches per 100,000 residents, followed by Hull with 29 and Leeds with 24. Improving ventilation by opening windows and using extractor fans, using a dehumidifier to control moisture levels, and addressing damp patches quickly can help prevent long-term damage.

With the UK’s unpredictable winters, staying prepared is key. Regular home maintenance, prompt repairs, and keeping an eye on potential problem areas can help prevent costly damage and keep homes warm and safe through the colder months.
