A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Necropolis, Goais state, Brazil, when a two-year-old boy, Salomao Rodrigues Faustino, lost his life from severe heatstroke after being left strapped in a locked car. The incident, which occurred on February 18, has left the local community in deep shock and raised serious concerns about child safety during extreme weather conditions.
Salomao, secured in his baby seat and rendered immobile, was trapped inside a vehicle exposed to blistering conditions as temperatures soared to 32°C outside. With all the windows and doors firmly closed, experts believe the internal temperature of the car could have reached nearly 60°C during the four hours he remained inside.
This tragic oversight ultimately proved fatal when Salomao was found in critical condition and later pronounced dead at Sagrado Coracao de Jesus Hospital, according to the Mirror.
Flaviane Lima, the nursery head responsible for transporting Salomao, was apprehended approximately 55 miles from the scene after allegedly attempting to flee. Authorities have charged her with manslaughter, and she is currently held in custody at the Provisional Prison Complex of Aparecida de Goiania. According to police reports, Lima had picked up the tot from his home and driven him to the nursery, only to mistakenly lock him inside her car after parking.
Police chief Andre Fernandes confirmed the details of the incident, stating, “The owner of the nursery forgot the two-year-old child inside the vehicle, who was locked in the car for four hours in the strong sun.” This revelation has sparked outrage among residents and prompted renewed calls for stricter safety protocols in childcare transport.
In the aftermath of the incident, Lima’s defense lawyer, Giovanni Caldas Vieira Machado, offered a statement emphasizing her state of distress. He claimed, “There was no intention, any conscious carelessness or deliberate negligence.” According to Machado, Lima was “deeply shaken” by the events and admitted that her focus had been diverted by the preparations for welcoming three new pupils, which contributed to her tragic oversight.
The grief and anguish of this incident are felt most profoundly by Salomao’s family. His devastated mother, Giselle Faustino, tearfully lamented the loss, saying, “They took my heart and joy. I can’t close my eyes without imagining your suffering. Forgive mummy, my love. I wanted to do so much for you.”
She further expressed her unbearable sorrow, adding, “How will I get home now and not witness your joy?! (…) I can’t close my eyes without imagining your suffering. Forgive Mommy, my love. I wanted to do so much for you.”
As the investigation continues, this tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of vigilance and safety in childcare.
