Tom Hanks Warns Fans About AI ‘Falsely Using My Name, Likeness, and Voice’ in Ads

Tom Hanks, 68, has issued a stern warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence, particularly regarding advertisements that use his likeness without his permission. The Oscar-winning actor took to Instagram to alert his fans about viral commercials that promote “miracle cures and wonder drugs” by using AI-generated versions of him.

In his message, Hanks stated, “There are multiple ads on the internet falsely using my name, likeness, and voice to promote miracle cures and wonder drugs. These ads have been created without my consent, fraudulently, and through AI.” He made it clear that he has no involvement with these products or the individuals promoting them, adding, “I have nothing to do with these posts, the products, the treatments, or the spokespeople touting these cures.”

Hanks emphasized the importance of being cautious and not falling for these deceptive tactics, urging his followers, “DO NOT BE FOOLED. DO NOT BE SWINDLED. DO NOT LOSE YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY.” He further clarified that he manages his type 2 diabetes with the help of his “board-certified doctor,” underscoring that he does not endorse any of the advertised treatments.

This is not the first time Hanks has spoken out against the unauthorized use of his likeness. Last year, he addressed a fake dental ad that misused his image. Hanks has also previously voiced his concerns about the increasing use of AI in the entertainment industry and its potential consequences.

In a May 2023 episode of British comedian Adam Buxton’s podcast, Hanks reflected on the rise of AI, saying, “We saw this coming. We saw that there was going to be this ability to take zeros and ones inside a computer and turn it into a face and a character. Now that has only grown a billion fold since then, and we see it everywhere.”

As AI technology continues to evolve, Hanks’ warnings serve as a crucial reminder of the ethical considerations and potential risks associated with its misuse, especially when it comes to manipulating the public with unauthorized and fraudulent content.
