Susanna Reid Clashes with Ayesha Hazarika Over Labour’s New Flexible Working Law on Good Morning Britain

Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid found herself in a lively debate with political commentator Ayesha Hazarika regarding Labour’s newly launched flexible working law. The Labour Party unveiled this key part of their workers’ rights package on Thursday, October 10, introducing a right to flexible working as the default for all employees.

Under the new law, employees can request flexible working arrangements, such as starting shifts later to manage childcare or working longer hours over fewer days. While employers still have the right to refuse these requests, they are now required to provide a clear explanation for any denial, told Daily Express.

In addition to flexible working, Labour’s Employment Rights Bill aims to end exploitative zero-hour contracts and guarantees rights to bereavement and parental leave from the very first day of employment.

During the Thursday episode of Good Morning Britain, Reid questioned whether the new legislation might inadvertently discourage employers from hiring young women due to concerns about potential pregnancies. This sparked a spirited exchange between her and Hazarika.

Reid raised the issue, asking if the new policies could lead employers to hesitate when hiring young women, fearing they might soon request flexible hours or maternity leave. The debate highlighted the complexities of implementing inclusive and protective work policies while balancing the concerns of employers and employees.

Hazarika defended the legislation, emphasizing the importance of protecting workers’ rights and ensuring fair and inclusive employment practices for all. Meanwhile, Reid’s pointed questions prompted laughter but also underscored the challenges of making flexible working a default right in the workplace.
