Susanna Reid brought Good Morning Britain to an abrupt halt to break some shocking news—Ukraine has launched what is being called its biggest drone attack on Russia in three years since the war began. A Russian civilian was killed and three others injured in the overnight assault, which saw hundreds of drones sent deep into Russian territory. Speaking to viewers, Susanna, 54, announced: “Ukraine has launched a major drone attack on Moscow in the early hours of this morning, killing at least one person and injuring others.”
Ed Balls followed up by linking the attack to crucial diplomatic talks taking place the same day. “It comes as high-stakes peace talks begin between The White House and Ukrainian officials—that’s happening in Saudi Arabia later today. The aim is to bring an end to the war in Russia”, reported the Express.
The hosts then passed over to Richard Gaisford, reporting live from the Ministry of Defence in London, who broke down the scale of the attack. “Ukraine sent more than 300 drones inside of Russia, many of them targeting what’s believed to be oil refineries outside of Moscow that supply the Russian military,” he explained. “They also hit Russian forces in Kursk, where Russian troops are trying to push back against Ukrainians who are currently on Russian soil.”
Videos and images released overnight showed Moscow’s air defenses firing into the sky, desperately trying to take down the incoming drones. According to Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, more than 70 drones were shot down over the Russian capital. Some still managed to cause damage, hitting seven apartments in the Ramensky district and setting cars alight in a car park in Domodedovo.
The attack wasn’t just limited to Moscow. Across 10 Russian regions, a total of 337 drones were intercepted, with 126 shot down over the Kursk region alone. Other areas hit included Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kaluga, Lipetsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Oryol, and Ryazan.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Saudi Arabia for the peace talks, meeting with leaders to discuss a possible ceasefire or peace agreement. However, Richard Gaisford noted that direct talks between Zelensky and the Americans aren’t happening. Instead, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is representing President Joe Biden and is reportedly keen to see “what concessions Ukrainians are willing to make.”
As tensions escalate both on the battlefield and in diplomatic circles, the world is watching closely to see what comes next—whether this latest Ukrainian offensive pushes Russia into a stronger retaliation or nudges both sides closer to a peace deal.
