During Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid gave viewers a candid glimpse into her home life while discussing a UK college’s decision to hire tutors to teach students how to make phone calls, according to the Daily Record. The initiative, aimed at helping young people overcome their fear of phone conversations, sparked debate among the panel.
Susanna noted that modern communication is often digital, saying: “Everything is online! People tend to email, text, or WhatsApp. They don’t speak to each other on the phone.”
Andrew Pierce added, “They don’t speak to each other at all! You hear stories about children in the same household texting each other in the same house! The world has gone mad.” With a laugh, Susanna admitted, “I’m afraid I’m guilty of that! I text my children to tell them dinner is ready”, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The segment revealed that teenagers increasingly struggle with making phone calls, leading to colleges providing training on interview techniques and call-handling scenarios. Susanna supported the idea, acknowledging the anxiety some people feel about phone calls.
“I don’t think this is a bad idea!” she said. “If you’re used to online or face-to-face communication, phone calls can be intimidating. They’re so complicated, those phone calls, aren’t they? You often have to navigate automated systems just to get to the right person.”
Guest Kevin Maguire echoed her sentiments, expressing that such training could prepare young people for the workforce. “If people at home haven’t taught them for whatever reason, then I think it’s good a college is doing it. I know we can mock it, and I raise my eyebrows a little too, but when you stop and think about it, it makes sense,” he said.
Adding to the discussion, Richard Madeley referenced a survey revealing that a quarter of 18- to 34-year-olds are afraid of answering the phone. Susanna found humor in the findings, joking: “Particularly if it’s their mum, I’ve noticed!”
While opinions remain divided on the necessity of such training, Susanna commended the initiative for equipping young people with valuable life skills. She concluded by emphasizing the importance of balancing digital communication with the ability to handle more traditional forms of interaction, such as phone calls.
