Storm Herminia Leaves Thousands Without Power and Flooding Sparks Urgent Warning to Commuters

Thousands of Britons remain without power as Storm Herminia brings heavy rain, gale-force winds, and significant disruption across the country. Commuters have been warned to exercise caution amid ongoing yellow weather warnings and a “danger to life” alert issued by the Met Office.

The storm, which first hit regions in Spain and France, has swept into the UK, causing widespread damage and chaos. The Met Office warned that Storm Herminia poses a risk of injuries and even fatalities, following the deadly impact of Storm Éowyn last week, which claimed two lives.

Yellow wind warnings are currently in place for South West England, South East England, East Anglia, Lincolnshire, Wales, and the Yorkshire coastlines. A yellow rain warning also covers much of Wales and the West Midlands, lasting until 11:59 p.m. today.

Forecasters expect rainfall between 20mm and 40mm in most affected areas, with higher ground seeing totals of up to 70mm. The Environment Agency has issued 40 flood warnings, primarily covering the South West and South Coast, while the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued two additional warnings, according to the BBC.

Strong winds have caused power outages in the South West, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 65 mph and potentially as high as 80 mph in some areas. Flooding has also been reported, adding to the disruption.

National Rail has warned of significant travel delays, with services affected by flooding, fallen trees, and other weather-related issues. ScotRail, Transport for Wales, CrossCountry, LNER, Avanti West Coast, and TransPennine Express are among the operators impacted. Commuters have been advised to check travel updates before embarking on their journeys.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna cautioned that unsettled weather will persist in the coming days. “We’re getting successive spells of wet and windy weather, which is obviously adding to impacts,” he explained.

The forecast for Monday includes heavy showers in the south, accompanied by gale-force winds, while snow is expected on northern hills. Gales in the South West are anticipated to ease overnight, but winds are expected to intensify in northern regions.

Tuesday brings a continued risk of heavy showers in the south, possibly with thunder, while longer rain spells in the North West should ease later. By Wednesday, the wet and windy conditions are expected to linger in the south, but more settled weather may arrive later in the week.

Authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, especially in regions at high risk of flooding and severe winds. As the unsettled weather continues, the UK braces for more challenges in the days ahead.
