This Morning Star Opens Up About ‘Dark Thoughts’ After Being Replaced

Siân Welby, This Morning presenter, has revealed that she returned to work soon after the birth of her daughter, Ruby, due to fears she would be “replaced.” The 38-year-old TV star gave birth to Ruby with her fiancé, Jake Beckett, last summer, and just two months later, she was back on the ITV show alongside co-host Craig Doyle.
In an interview with The Sun, Siân admitted that she felt “nervous” about taking extended maternity leave from both her TV work and her hosting role at Capital FM. “I worried I would be off for a month and they would decide someone else is better and then they would replace me. Those are the dark thoughts you have,” she confessed.
Siân went on to explain that this fear was likely one of the reasons she had been hesitant to have children earlier in life. “It’s probably what put me off earlier in my life even thinking about having kids, because I thought, ‘How could I?’” she said, reflecting on the pressures faced by women in the industry, reported by Metro.co.uk.
She ultimately took three months off, a break that she described as the longest she had ever taken from work. Despite the short duration, she “fully embraced” the time with her new daughter. “I think most women in the TV industry will admit you get a bit nervous about having time off to have a baby, especially if you have just worked your whole life to get where you are, which I have.”
Siân had made her first appearance back on This Morning via video link just days after giving birth via an emergency C-section. She admitted feeling “delirious” but overjoyed. “I’m tired, I’m delirious, but it is the best thing I’ve ever done, and I’m just absolutely over the moon, I’m in love. I’m loving every second, despite it being absolute carnage,” she shared with Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley.
The birth didn’t go according to her original plan, as she had hoped for a water birth but ended up needing an emergency C-section. “It boils down to what’s the safest way. In the end, I did have an emergency C-section, but I felt so safe. I was in amazing hands,” she said, offering heartfelt praise for the midwives who supported her. “Any midwife watching now, you are a different breed of human, I just want to thank you,” Siân added.
Siân also recalled the special moment when she brought Ruby to her first day back at work on This Morning. “Little Ruby, oh it’s so sweet to have her with me today because I was quite nervous about leaving her,” she said. The TV star expressed gratitude for the support she received on social media, writing on Instagram Stories, “Today was so special having @jakebeckett92 and Ruby on my first day back at work. Thanks for all the lovely messages of support it means a lot.”
Siân’s career began in 2010 at Channel 5 News, and she has since built a successful career across various broadcasting platforms. Most recently, she joined This Morning in 2023 as a showbiz reporter and was soon announced as a main presenter.
