Sara Davies, the well-known Dragons’ Den star and entrepreneur from County Durham, has recently opened up about her transformative journey on Strictly Come Dancing. The 40-year-old revealed her true feelings regarding her former dance partner, pro dancer Aljaz Skorjanec, and the profound impact the show had on her life. Sara, who joined the 2021 season with a burning desire to take on the challenge, has now shared that it was her “life’s goal” to join the prestigious dance contest, reported by Lancs Live.
Partnered with Aljaz, the pair competed fiercely in the 2021 season, performing an Argentine tango to Donna Summer’s “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” that earned them a score of 32. Despite their efforts, the duo was eliminated in week eight after a tense Dance Off against Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin. Although their time on the show was cut short, Sara’s experience did not end in defeat. Instead, it paved the way for enduring relationships and personal growth.
Speaking to the Telegraph about her determination to join the show, Sara confessed,
“I was desperate to do that show. Literally, I got myself an agent and I said, ‘My life’s goal is to get on Strictly.’ And it wasn’t just because I was desperate to dance with a really sexy, hot man.”
Her candid remark highlights the blend of ambition and a touch of humor that has characterized her approach to life and dance.
Over the course of the season, a strong friendship developed between Sara and Aljaz, extending beyond their time on stage. Remarkably, Sara also formed a close bond with Aljaz’s wife, Janette Manrara. The trio now enjoy joint holidays together and even take turns babysitting each other’s children. Reflecting on the unexpected closeness, Sara remarked,
“Before I did the show, I would never have been able to understand it – someone I’d never met, then three months later, I would think of them as a brother? But you do.”
This unexpected familial connection has helped shape Sara’s positive outlook following her exit from Strictly.
The departure from the show was emotionally challenging for Sara. She admitted that after leaving, she “really struggled” and experienced moments of uncontrollable tears. In an interview on the High Performance podcast, she compared her entrance into the world of Strictly to stepping into an “alternative universe” and recalled crying more over her exit from what she humorously described as a “b****y dance competition.”
Since her time on Strictly, Sara Davies has undergone an impressive weight loss journey, shedding upwards of three stone, and now describes herself as a “really happy size 14.” Looking ahead, she is set to launch a new 16-part BBC series titled The Big Idea Works, where she will collaborate with engineers to bring budding inventors’ ideas to life. As Sara continues to expand her horizons, her Strictly experience remains a cherished and life-altering chapter—one that has gifted her lifelong friendships and invaluable personal insights.
