Warwick Davis’s wife died just as she was set to go home
Actress Samantha Davis, beloved wife of Harry Potter star Warwick Davis, died unexpectedly just hours before she was due to be discharged from the hospital, an inquest has revealed, reported the Independent.
The 53-year-old passed away on March 24 last year at University College Hospital in London after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. She had been admitted on February 7 after losing mobility in her lower limbs due to a disc prolapse and later underwent two thoracotomy procedures to open her chest wall—first on February 20 and again on March 14.
Doctors believed her condition was improving steadily, and plans were in place to send her home the next day. But, tragically, Samantha went into cardiac arrest at 11.25 pm on March 23. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
At the inquest held at Inner West London Coroner’s Court, Senior Coroner Professor Fiona Wilcox confirmed that Samantha’s death was caused by “arrhythmic cardiac arrest and complications following left thoracotomies.” She noted there were no prior signs of arrhythmia and described the situation as “heartbreaking.”
“In my view, the stress of everything together has precipitated this arrhythmic cardiac arrest in a lady who was not known to have any previous arrhythmia problems,” she said.
Prof Wilcox praised the care Samantha received throughout her time at the hospital, saying, “I have found nothing but excellent care being delivered to this lady and all of her complications were appropriately managed. It is frankly heartbreaking that the surgery itself was successful only for complications to arise and to cause her death.”
Cardiothoracic surgeon David Lawrence told the inquest that by March 23, Samantha had her surgical drains removed, a stable chest x-ray, and no signs of bleeding. Everything had been going well, and the team was confident she would be heading home the next day.
“Very sadly, on the night this happened the original plan had been that she would be discharged home the following day,” he said. “This patient did not bleed during the day and her condition was progressing well.”
Mr Lawrence also described Samantha as a “delightful lady” and said he believed the hospital “would not have done anything differently.”
A post-mortem conducted on April 5, 2024, confirmed that her death was the result of complications from a left hemothorax—internal bleeding in the lung area—following the thoracotomy procedures.
