Richard Madeley wins Celebrity Catchphrase after giving away answers

Richard Madeley might have been the most generous contestant on Celebrity Catchphrase, but somehow, he still came out on top—winning over £17,000 for charity.

The Good Morning Britain host went up against entertainment reporter Sian Welby and comedian Axel Blake in the ITV1 game show, hoping to raise funds for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust. But instead of just answering the clues, Madeley kept blurting out the right answers before his opponents had even locked in their guesses—handing them points on a silver platter.

From the very start, it looked like Richard was heading for a crash course in game show embarrassment. He even admitted it himself, saying, “I’ve learned not to make predictions in shows like this…I’m going to try, guys.”

He hit the buzzer first on a clue that was “in the lap of the gods,” but hilariously shouted out “wrong side of the bed.” Close… but no. Axel Blake pounced and took the round. In another round, Madeley guessed “shooting for the moon” when the answer was actually “shooting for the stars”—giving Sian Welby the edge.

Stephen Mulhern, who was hosting the show, couldn’t help but laugh: “Is Richard just here to help you two out?” to which Richard cheekily responded, “I live to serve.”

The most ironic moment? Richard flubbed the catchphrase “Richard and Judy”—a direct reference to himself and his wife, Judy Finnigan. Welby swooped in and snagged the win for that round, too.

And yet, despite all the slip-ups, Madeley somehow ended up with more prize money than both his competitors, making it all the way to the final. Mulhern jokingly called him “a clever dick,” to which Richard quickly responded: “Lose the clever.”

Even he seemed surprised at how things played out, saying, “The cards just fell right. We were all kind of helping each other because most of us got our guesses right when someone had nearly got it right.”

Meanwhile, Axel Blake kept things light with a hilarious story during the intro. When asked about his worst gig, the Britain’s Got Talent winner revealed, “Someone asked me to perform at a funeral wake.” Mulhern, shocked, asked what he would’ve opened with, and Blake cracked, “‘I know you’ve been dying to see me,’ or something!”

Despite the chaotic gameplay, it all worked out in the end. Madeley walked away with a win, some laughs, and a hefty donation for his chosen cause.
