Richard Madeley Breaks Down in Tears on Live TV After Being ‘Completely Floored’ by Shocking Death

Richard Madeley became visibly emotional while reflecting on his illustrious career during a poignant Channel 5 documentary, celebrating his work alongside his wife Judy Finnigan. The Good Morning Britain anchor looked back on his time at Granada and hosting This Morning, but it was his memories of taking over Sir Terry Wogan’s Radio 2 program after the broadcasting legend’s death in 2016 that truly stirred his emotions.

Madeley, who stepped into Wogan’s shoes following his passing at age 77, confessed his feelings live on air, telling listeners, “None of us saw this coming,” as the world mourned the beloved Children in Need host. Even years later, the sorrow still lingers for Richard.

During the documentary, Judy Finnigan comforted her husband as he recounted the daunting experience of filling Wogan’s esteemed role. Richard recalled the emotional broadcast: “It was all very emotional. It went fine, and the guests spoke beautifully, so I didn’t have to do much, thankfully,” The Mirror reports.

As the program ended, Richard remembered looking into the gallery filled with Radio 2 staff, presenters, producers, and station heads, all watching in silence. He reflected on that moment, thinking to himself, “I don’t think I let Terry down there.”

Tears interrupted his recollection, and Judy gently reassured him, saying, “You did very well.” The documentary also revealed a charming behind-the-scenes anecdote from when Richard and Judy first began working together at Granada. Richard shared, “I was sitting at my desk when this hand appeared on my shoulder, and I looked up at Judy. She said, ‘Hi, I’m your Mummy,’ and I thought, ‘Whaaaaat?'” He explained that at Granada, new employees were assigned a “mum” or “dad” to show them around, and Judy was his.

Reflecting on their early career and eventual marriage, Richard disclosed that although they wed in 1986, Granada was initially hesitant to let them work as a pair. It wasn’t until they teamed up for a charity event two years later that their iconic partnership on This Morning began, making television history and solidifying their status as one of TV’s most beloved duos.
