Paul O’Grady’s Widower Finally Gets Permission for Heartfelt Headstone Tribute—Fans React!

Nearly two years after the sudden passing of TV legend Paul O’Grady, his widower Andre Portasio has finally been given the green light to place a headstone on Paul’s grave – and fans are breathing a collective sigh of relief. Paul, who died unexpectedly on March 28, 2023, at the age of 67 due to sudden cardiac arrhythmia, was laid to rest the following month at St Rumwold’s Churchyard in Bonnington.
Since then, the beloved entertainer’s grave has remained without a headstone, sparking concern and sadness from those who adored him. Back in September, it came to light that the delay wasn’t down to neglect, but rather a slow-moving process involving official permissions, reported Liverpool Echo.
Because the churchyard is consecrated ground, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Canterbury, meaning any permanent memorial requires formal approval from the ecclesiastical court. As Andre explained, a petition had been submitted to the Commissary Court in June 2024. The Diocese confirmed that the application was being handled in line with the usual legal timeframes – not exactly speedy, but by the book.
But finally, on March 20, Andre shared an emotional update via Paul’s Instagram page. Alongside a photo of his late husband, he wrote: “Nearly two years since Paul’s sad passing, today I received some good news!”
He thanked everyone involved in the long process, especially the Diocese of Canterbury, the Parish of Bonnington, and St Rumwold’s Church. A special shoutout went to Robin Hopkins, the Commissary General, for giving the final design the green light.
Andre also revealed a sweet and personal touch: the gravestone will honor not just Paul, but also his former partner and “best mate” Brendan Murphy, who passed away in 2005 from a brain tumor. The two are buried side by side.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a true tribute to Paul without a nod to his deep love for animals. Andre said the headstone will include a small statue of a dog – a fitting symbol for someone as passionate about pups as he was about people.
“I appreciate everyone who visits the grave and supports our church community,” Andre added. “Your kindness and compassion mean the world to me. I look forward to finally being able to give Paul a deserving and fitting resting place.”
Fans were quick to show their love in the comments. “Fabulous news,” one wrote. “Thanks for persisting with the gravestone.” Another added: “Such a fitting tribute to a wonderful man who was loved by so many, but taken too soon.”
