Nurse Dies After Two Doses of Weight Loss Jab and Heartbroken Niece Issues Urgent Warning
0A 58-year-old nurse, Susan McGowan, tragically passed away after receiving just two low doses of a weight-loss injection. Susan, who worked at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie, took the prescribed medication tirzepatide, marketed under the brand name Mounjaro, following medical advice. However, her death certificate later indicated that “use of prescribed tirzepatide” was a contributing factor.
Susan obtained the prescription through a registered online pharmacy and began using the medication in the days leading up to her death. After her second injection, she experienced severe stomach pain and nausea. She was admitted to A&E at Monklands Hospital, where her colleagues worked tirelessly to save her life. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Susan passed away in September 2024, according to the Daily Record.
Her devastated niece, Jade Campbell, has since called for caution, urging women to explore other weight loss options before resorting to injections. Jade said, “Speak to your GP, there might be another option before you jump on weight-loss injections.”
Tirzepatide is part of a class of medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which are designed to make patients feel fuller for longer. The medication was approved for weight loss in the UK in 2023 by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Dr. Alison Cave of MHRA emphasized that new medications, including tirzepatide, undergo more rigorous monitoring to quickly identify any emerging safety concerns.
The manufacturer of Mounjaro, Eli Lilly, stated that the drug was approved after extensive clinical assessments. Semaglutide, another GLP-1 receptor agonist sold under brand names like Wegovy and Ozempic, has also been linked to 23 suspected deaths in the UK since 2019.
While these drugs are approved for use in the UK, doctors stress that they should only be administered under close medical supervision. Recently, the UK government announced plans to make tirzepatide available to the unemployed as part of a scheme to help them return to work. Health Secretary Wes Streeting called the jab “game-changing.”
The tragic death of Susan McGowan serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with weight-loss medications and highlights the importance of seeking professional medical advice before starting any treatment.
