Murder Investigation Launched Seven Weeks After Eight-Year-Old Kyran Durnin Went Missing

A murder investigation has been launched seven weeks after eight-year-old Kyran Durnin went missing from Co Louth, Ireland. Kyran and his mother, Dayla Durnin, 24, were last seen on the night of August 28, and despite extensive efforts, authorities have been unable to locate the boy or gather evidence that he is still alive, told the Mirror.

The pair were staying at the home of Dayla’s mother, Rhonda Byrne Tyson, when they disappeared. Rhonda had gone to bed, leaving them sleeping on the sofa, but when she awoke the next morning, they were gone. After two days of unsuccessful searching, Rhonda reported them missing to the Gardaí on August 30.

An Garda Siochana confirmed that Kyran is now presumed dead. “Despite extensive inquiries carried out by gardai to date, we have been unable to either locate Kyran, identify any information on his current whereabouts, or any evidence that he is currently alive,” a spokesperson said, told Daily Mail. “Following inquiries to date, investigating Gardai now believe that Kyran is missing presumed dead. A murder investigation has been commenced.”

Speaking to Drogheda Life, Rhonda revealed that Dayla had left a note, explaining she needed to get away for a few days. Rhonda, deeply worried, shared that her daughter had recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and spent much of the summer in the hospital. “Last Christmas, Dayla was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and now she has to inject herself five times a day,” Rhonda said. “I’m worried sick. I know that she got a supply of medication recently, but I’m terrified about what will happen when that runs out.”

Rhonda is currently caring for Dayla’s two other children, Isla, 3, and Laseigh, 7, while continuing her desperate efforts to reach her daughter. “I’ve been phoning her mobile every day to try and reach her,” Rhonda said. “I just want to tell Dayla to please get in touch and let us know she and Kyran are alright.”

In an emotional plea, Rhonda added, “Your girls are missing you dreadfully; they don’t understand why you’re not at home with them. All our hearts are broken. You are the only person who knows where Kyran is, and all of his family want him home safe and sound.”

As the investigation unfolds, the family and community remain heartbroken, holding onto hope for answers in the search for Kyran.
