Mother and ex-partner Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murdering Toddler in Kent

In a tragic and shocking incident, an 18-month-old boy named Alfie Phillips was brutally murdered in Kent. The toddler suffered 70 injuries, including bruises, broken ribs, arms, and legs, in a vicious attack. Alfie’s mother, 27-year-old Sian Hedges, and her ex-boyfriend, 35-year-old Jack Benham, were found guilty of his murder.

The court learned that on the night of Alfie’s death, Hedges and Benham were consuming whisky and cocaine in Benham’s caravan in Hernhill, near Faversham. Tragically, Alfie was also found to have traces of cocaine in his system. The prosecution described the event as a night of “violent discipline,” leading to Alfie’s death from beating and smothering.

Both defendants received life sentences, with Benham facing a minimum of 23 years and Hedges 19 years in prison. The judge highlighted the “unimaginable pain” Alfie suffered during the “frenzied attack.”

The couple’s relationship, which began in September 2020 and involved drug use, was marked by disturbing behavior. Text messages revealed Benham’s abusive attitude towards Alfie, including an instance where he encouraged Hedges to bite the child.

In their defense, Hedges and Benham denied harming Alfie. Benham claimed to have accidentally suffocated Alfie, but this was contradicted by the evidence of multiple injuries sustained by the toddler.

Alfie’s father, Sam Phillips, in a heart-wrenching statement, expressed his grief and loss, lamenting the many milestones and moments he would never share with his son. The case has left a profound impact, serving as a grim reminder of the horrors of child abuse and the devastating consequences of drug and alcohol misuse.
