Met Office Issues New Yellow Thunderstorm Warning for Southern England

The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow thunderstorm warning for the south of England, effective from 5 am this morning until at least midday. The warning covers a significant portion of southern England, including London, Canterbury, Brighton, Exeter, and Plymouth.

The Met Office stated, “Heavy rain with squally winds and thundery downpours will sweep quickly east across southern counties of England on Tuesday morning.” The yellow thunderstorm warning signifies potential weather impacts, as outlined by the Met Office.

Storm Debi brought 80mph winds to the UK and Ireland on Monday, causing widespread travel disruption. Trains faced delays, and British Airways canceled dozens of flights, with around 50 flights from London Heathrow affected. Wind speeds of up to 77mph affected Northern Ireland, northwest Wales, and the north of England, leading to a ‘small number of cancellations,’ according to the airline

“We’ve apologized to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans and our teams are working hard to get them on their way as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson added.

The strong winds led to fallen trees on railway tracks and damaged overhead lines, prompting rail companies to experience delays and cancellations. In response to the weather conditions, Network Rail Scotland implemented speed limits, leading to the cancellation of travel on the lines between Dumfries and Sanquhar due to flooding. A restriction was also imposed on the West Highland line between Garelochhead and Crianlarich.

The Met Office issued an amber weather warning in northwest England for Monday, cautioning about the potential for building damage and likely travel disruption amidst the chaotic weather.

In Ireland, power cuts affected 100,000 homes and businesses, leaving them without electricity. Additionally, a postal worker in County Limerick was struck by debris during the severe weather.
