Meghan Markle claps back at ‘Harry is adoptive son’ narrative

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan has garnered praise from a surprising source—rugby legend Matt Dawson. The six-episode docuseries, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex share their side of the story regarding their time in the Royal Family, has been lauded for its transparency, with Dawson offering his thoughts on the couple’s candid portrayal.

Speaking with The Express, Dawson revealed that his initial reaction to the documentary was one of skepticism. “In the first 10 minutes, I was thinking, ‘Oh no, this is like a woe is me type doc,’” he admitted. However, as he continued watching, Dawson acknowledged the importance of hearing their story directly from them.

Reflecting on a pivotal moment in the documentary, where Meghan said, “The past six years of my life, books are written about our story from people who I don’t know. Doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?” Dawson shared his evolving view: “I just thought, do you know what, in their environment and where everyone is going to have a view of Harry because he is a bit of an adopted son to everybody after what happened in the past, I sort of thought, ‘ok, go with it’.”

Dawson expressed that, despite the mixed opinions surrounding the couple, the documentary allowed them to present their own version of events. “We all want to know what they are like, so why don’t we just get to see what they are like? It is what it is, but at least it’s in their voice,” he said, adding that the documentary has served its purpose by providing insight that wouldn’t have been available otherwise.

The rugby legend went on to discuss the public’s fascination with the Royal Family, saying, “We are obviously all interested in it and we are getting those little nuggets that we wouldn’t have known before.”

Dawson concluded by urging people to embrace the documentary, stating, “Let’s separate, you know, let’s not worry about the deal and what their life is now. We are interested and the nature of us and the Royal Family is that we want to know what is going on and we are getting told from the horse’s mouth, so let’s embrace it and take it on board.”

Dawson’s comments highlight the continued public intrigue around the Sussexes and their willingness to share their story on their terms.
