Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly in the early stages of planning significant renovations to a little-known redbrick annex at their Adelaide Cottage residence in Windsor, sources suggest. This project is part of an initiative to create a recovery sanctuary for the Princess of Wales following her health challenges.

The couple moved to the charming Adelaide Cottage on the Berkshire estate in late summer 2022. While they primarily reside in the four-bedroom home, they also spend time at their larger property, Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham Estate. The proposed renovations to the annex, which is currently unoccupied and in need of significant updates, are aimed at providing additional privacy and space during the Princess’s recovery period, by Mirror.

Insiders have disclosed that the royal couple is keen on transforming the annex into a peaceful retreat that would complement their current living arrangements, especially when school terms dictate a closer proximity to Lambrook School, where their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—are enrolled. “The family loves the practicality and intimacy of Adelaide Cottage for everyday living, but the annex would provide that extra space and seclusion necessary during recovery times,” a source revealed.

Despite the clear need for more space, Prince William is reportedly very aware of the potential public scrutiny surrounding royal expenditures. He is therefore taking a thoughtful approach to the financing of the project, considering personal funding for the renovation costs. “The Prince is acutely conscious of how royal spending is perceived by the public. As such, they are planning to manage the renovation costs privately,” added the source.

The annex, which is currently not suitable for use, would require extensive renovation to meet the needs of the family. Plans include not only structural refurbishments but also creating an environment conducive to rest and recovery. “The project is on hold as the family focuses on the Princess’s health, but it remains a priority behind the scenes,” the source noted.

Anmer Hall remains the family’s preferred retreat due to its size and the privacy it offers, which are crucial for Kate’s recovery process. The estate has been a favored sanctuary for the family, providing a much-needed respite from public life.

Historically, Adelaide Cottage has been a significant residence within the Royal estate. Built in 1831 as a retreat for Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV, the cottage was refurbished in 2015 and is known for its exquisite interior, including a master bedroom adorned with gilded dolphins and rope ornamentation. The home’s close proximity to Lambrook School and relative privacy following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding has made it an ideal choice for the young family.
