Emotional Kate Garraway Fights Back Tears Over Heartbreaking Milestone Without Derek Draper, Fans Rally in Support
0Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has received overwhelming support from fans and co-stars as she marked her first wedding anniversary without her husband, Derek Draper. In an emotional video shared on Instagram, the 57-year-old opened up about the profound sadness she felt on the personal milestone, following Derek’s passing in January after a long battle with the effects of Covid-19.
Fighting back tears, Kate shared a heartfelt message with her 1.3 million followers, reflecting on their 20th wedding anniversary. “It still is my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek,” she said, adding, “It’s one of those days that we talked about—like Christmas, Easter, his birthday—where you really feel a punch to the stomach.”
In the video, Kate expressed how the anniversary felt especially difficult because it was a day that was deeply personal to both of them. “This one, particularly, I’ve been feeling very sorry for myself,” she admitted. “The fact that he’s not here makes me feel very sad.”
Kate also revealed how she’s been coping with the grief, saying she’s been “leaning into the grief” by re-reading anniversary cards from Derek. Reflecting on their relationship, she said, “I was so lucky to have experienced such romance” and expressed her hope that “hopefully he knew” how much he meant to her, told The Sun.
In the caption accompanying the emotional clip, Kate wrote, “So it’s our wedding anniversary today, feeling super emotional but also so grateful to all that Derek brought into my life.” She also mentioned the upcoming National Television Awards (NTAs), where her documentary, Derek’s Story, is nominated. “It will be so hard to go without him, but Darcey, Bill, and I WILL go to celebrate his life and honor all the hard work of doctors, nurses, and carers.”
Kate’s Good Morning Britain co-stars rallied around her. Adil Ray commented, “Happy anniversary Kate and good luck tomorrow. Derek will be there with you, in your heart.” Laura Tobin added, “Sending love to you.” Susanna Reid simply wrote, “Love you,” with a red heart emoji.
Fans also expressed their admiration, with one commenting, “If what you did isn’t one of the purest expressions of love, loyalty, and dedication, I don’t know what is. He knew.” Another added, “Derek would be so proud of you and the kids. The next rainbow you see, it will be Derek.”
Kate’s journey with Derek, chronicled in the ITV documentary Derek’s Story, has touched many. The documentary, which highlights the family’s struggle after Derek contracted Covid, has since been nominated for an NTA, with Kate continuing to honor his memory and the challenges he faced.
