Kate Garraway Reveals Why She’s Been Silent About Late Husband Derek Draper

Kate Garraway has shared the heartfelt reason for her recent silence regarding her late husband Derek Draper’s condition. The television presenter, who is nominated for a National Television Award for her documentary Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, revealed her hesitance to post about the nomination due to past backlash. The documentary chronicles Derek’s lengthy health battle after contracting COVID-19, and tragically, he passed away in January 2024.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Kate explained why she had refrained from discussing the nomination: “I haven’t posted I’ve been nominated yet because I got so much backlash from doing it, for people saying ‘stop going on about it’. But actually, I realize I’m letting people down.”

Derek’s death came nearly four years after his initial illness, and following a brief leave of absence, Kate returned to her role at Good Morning Britain. Reflecting on the making of the documentary, she admitted it was emotionally challenging but felt it was important to offer support to others, told Leeds Live.

“One of the biggest frustrations for Derek was that he felt like a burden,” Kate shared. “He wanted to contribute, to help others, and making this documentary was his way of speaking up for the people who supported him – the carers, our family, and everyone in the care system.”

Kate emphasized how much Derek wanted to honor the carers and raise awareness for the ongoing challenges they face. “It’s wonderful to have the chance to honor him and the millions like him,” she said. “I’m sad because I no longer have the opportunity to care for him, but I feel it’s my responsibility to continue advocating for carers.”

Despite grappling with her personal grief, Kate remains a passionate advocate for other carers, pushing for more government support. “If something can be done, it would be a wonderful legacy for Derek,” she said, getting emotional. “It’s hard because I’m trying to separate my personal grief, but this is an important issue. Politicians and society as a whole need to address it and decide what really matters to us.”

Kate’s courage in sharing her journey and her advocacy for carers continues to resonate with many, as she remains committed to making a difference in their lives.
