Speculation Mounts Over End of Friendship Between Harry, Meghan and the Beckhams
Speculation has been mounting for some time about the growing distance between Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and David and Victoria Beckham, reported by the Daily Mail. The latest development, however, could signal the end of their once close friendship. The Beckhams were recent surprise guests at a state banquet hosted by King Charles during the Qatar state visit to the UK, and royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believes this move shows their alignment with the Sussexes may be over.
The Beckhams had been considered friends of the Sussexes for years, attending their wedding in 2018 and reportedly welcoming Meghan to the UK. However, things began to shift after a series of misunderstandings. A key turning point came after Victoria Beckham reportedly helped Meghan navigate her new life in London, giving her access to her network of stylists and hairdressers. But when this became public, it upset the Sussexes, particularly Meghan, who suspected Victoria may have leaked stories about her to the press. This tension led to Harry reportedly confronting David Beckham in a phone call, leaving the former footballer “furious.”
After this, while the two couples made attempts to move past the tension, things were never quite the same. David and Victoria attended Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, but the relationship appeared strained in the following months. In 2018, when the Sussexes were in Sydney for the Invictus Games, Harry reportedly asked David Beckham to be an ambassador for the event. However, tensions escalated further when Harry refused to meet David at the Games, fueling speculation that Meghan’s insecurities were the cause of the growing rift, according to the Mirror.
Since then, the relationship has seemed increasingly distant. The Sussexes were absent from the lavish wedding of Brooklyn Beckham to actress Nicola Peltz in 2022, and when David Beckham made headlines last year by welcoming Lionel Messi to his Inter Miami team, the Sussexes were once again nowhere to be seen. With David and Harry’s recent public appearances together, including a visit to Highgrove and a collaboration on charity work, it’s clear that David has grown closer to Harry’s estranged royal family, particularly Prince William.
With the Beckhams’ latest appearance at King Charles’ state banquet, it seems more likely that the bond between them and the Sussexes may be irreparably damaged. As Fitzwilliams puts it, the Beckhams’ involvement in the royal circle now sends a clear message: “The Sussexes, Meghan in particular, became jealous of a couple who are clearly strong supporters of the royal family, including William.”
