Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Website Relaunch Sparks Controversy Over Timing and Royal Ties

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s latest website launch has drawn criticism from PR and marketing experts, who label it as a “calculated move” with “questionable timing”.

Operating under “The Office of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex”, the website prominently features their Sussex titles, despite the couple’s withdrawal from active royal duties in 2019.

This unveiling follows closely on the heels of Prince Charles’ public revelation about his cancer diagnosis, raising eyebrows for its perceived “poor timing”. Furthermore, the couple’s continued association with their royal titles and symbols has sparked debate over their commitment to distancing themselves from the monarchy.

Natalie Trice, a PR and media expert, expressed her concerns regarding the timing of the launch amidst King Charles’ health concerns, suggesting that it could further exacerbate tensions within the royal family. Trice also highlighted the potential damage to the couple’s public image, citing discrepancies between their branding strategy and their proclaimed desire for independence.

The website’s focus on Harry’s book sales, juxtaposed with underwhelming performances from their Archewell, Netflix, and Spotify ventures, has raised speculation about their financial motivations behind the rebranding, according to The Mirror.

Trice predicts potential fallout with the royal family, citing conflicts with palace protocol and the likelihood of strained relationships. She emphasizes the need for careful consideration of their brand strategy to mitigate further damage.

Ashley Rudd, another PR expert, suggests that the website may serve as a means for the couple to appeal to a younger, Gen-Z audience. Rudd posits that the rebranding effort aligns with the couple’s pursuit of financial independence and their desire to connect with audiences who prioritize authenticity and purpose-driven initiatives.
