Government Encourages Jobseekers to Explore Booming Beauty Industry during British Beauty Week

The UK’s beauty industry, a significant contributor of £20 billion to the country’s economy, takes the spotlight during British Beauty Week (26th – 30th October). As the event highlights the thriving beauty brands in Britain, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) seizes the opportunity to urge jobseekers to consider the array of career options within the sector.

With over 4,000 job openings available on the Government’s Find a Job portal, individuals with varying levels of experience can explore fulfilling roles such as beauticians, merchandisers, lecturers, and more. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has previously praised the British beauty industry as a shining example of British business, recognizing its significant £20 billion annual contribution to the UK economy.

Diane Whitbread, an Employer Engagement Advisor at the DWP, encourages jobseekers to take a closer look at careers in the beauty industry during British Beauty Week. She emphasizes the sector’s potential for growth, exciting job prospects, skill development opportunities, and avenues for career advancement.

Jobcentres across the UK are collaborating with employers to promote and fill beauty-related job vacancies, including positions offered by Elite Hotels, a company that owns three premium hotels in the South of England. The government is also working in partnership with the British Beauty Council to foster excellence in the industry. Established in 2018, the council acts as a sector champion, providing financial support and guidance to numerous workers.

Millie Kendal OBE, the CEO of the British Beauty Council, highlights the industry’s significant contribution to the UK’s GDP, surpassing sectors such as creative arts and entertainment and aerospace manufacturing. She notes the diverse range of opportunities available within the beauty sector.

To showcase these opportunities, the council has introduced the “Future Talent Programme,” aimed at uncovering unique roles in technology, fragrance, sustainability, and cosmetic science for individuals aged 11-18. Through engaging short films, the program aims to cultivate a pipeline of exceptional talent for a creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial sector.
