Experts Issue Urgent Warning as HMPV Virus Puts Strain on NHS Hospitals

The NHS is grappling with significant challenges as the spread of a globally circulating virus, human metapneumovirus (HMPV), puts additional pressure on hospitals across the UK. Health officials are urging the public to avoid medical facilities if symptoms arise and to wear face coverings during ward visits to mitigate risks.

HMPV, first discovered in the Netherlands in 2001, is part of the same viral family as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). While the virus is causing widespread concern, experts stress it lacks pandemic potential, as reported by Wales Online. Dr. Andrew Catchpole from the health research organization hVIVO explained, “Whilst HMPV does mutate and change over time with new strains emerging, it is not a virus that we consider to have pandemic potential. This is because the changes in HMPV are gradual and based on previously circulating strains.”

Though instances of HMPV infections in England peaked in December, recent data indicates a stable rate. Approximately 4.5% of patients visiting GPs for respiratory issues test positive for HMPV, with children under five being the most affected group, showing a positivity rate of 7.2%, according to Surrey Live.

HMPV spreads through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces, typically causing mild upper respiratory tract infections. Symptoms include cough, fever, runny nose, sneezing, congestion, sore throat, and general fatigue. These symptoms usually last up to two weeks. However, the virus poses a greater threat to vulnerable groups, including young children under two, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients. In severe cases, HMPV can lead to lung inflammation and pneumonia.

Dr. Conall Watson, consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, remarked, “HMPV is a common respiratory infection in winter, and we typically see activity reaching a peak at this time of year. Infections are usually mild, causing symptoms of a common cold.” He reassured the public that current levels are consistent with seasonal expectations, noting that most individuals have been exposed to HMPV by the age of five and continue to encounter it throughout their lives.

To reduce the spread of HMPV and other respiratory viruses, Dr. Watson advises regular hand washing, catching sneezes in tissues, and wearing a face mask if symptoms such as fever, cough, and fatigue are present. He added, “If you have symptoms and need to go out, consider wearing a face mask to protect others, particularly those who are vulnerable.”

As health officials monitor the situation, they continue to emphasize the importance of preventive measures to alleviate pressures on the NHS.
