Prince Edward Assumes New Role as Colonel of Scots Guards After Duke of Kent Steps Down

After an impressive tenure spanning half a century, the Duke of Kent, cousin to the late Queen, has retired from his role as Colonel of the Scots Guards at the age of 88. Succeeding him is Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, who will now take on the responsibilities of this esteemed position.

The Scots Guards, a regiment with a storied history dating back to 1642, paid homage to the Duke of Kent, praising him as “a constant in a rapidly changing world.” Reflecting on his long service, the Duke of Kent shared his deep sense of honor in leading the regiment since 1974, a role he described as “the longest anyone has spent in this position.” He recounted the valor and dedication he witnessed among the guards during both peacetime and conflicts, highlighting their “bravery, selfless courage, and devotion to duty.” by Sky News.

The transition was formally marked at the Scots Guard’s annual day of commemoration and remembrance in London, which also served as the Duke of Kent’s final day in the role. Expressing his pride in the regiment, he was pleased to announce that Prince Edward would be taking over to “continue to champion all that you do and work towards preserving your great legacy.”

In his new capacity as Colonel, Prince Edward expressed both honor and humility. He commended the Duke of Kent for his profound impact and dedication to the regiment, acknowledging the large shoes he has to fill. “The Duke of Kent has been an extraordinary Colonel of the Scots Guards,” said Prince Edward, emphasizing his predecessor’s deep knowledge and passionate advocacy for the regiment’s members. He pledged to do his utmost in continuing this legacy.

The Regimental Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel JDL Leask, conveyed the regiment’s enthusiasm for Prince Edward’s appointment, noting, “The Regiment is delighted that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will shortly become the twenty-seventh Colonel Scots Guards.” He described the occasion as a pivotal moment, signaling both the conclusion of a remarkable chapter and the beginning of an exciting new era for the Scots Guards.

This significant change comes at a time when the Scots Guards continue to be an integral part of the British Armed Forces, with a history of involvement in major global conflicts and peacekeeping missions across the world.
