Deadly Houseflies Invading UK Homes Carry 65 Diseases Experts Urgently Warn

Now that the warm weather’s finally making an appearance, it’s only natural to fling open the windows, soak in the sun, and enjoy that fresh breeze. But there’s a nasty downside to all that sunshine: the dreaded return of flies. And we’re not just talking about a harmless buzz here and there—these pests can be a real problem.

While they might seem like nothing more than an annoying summertime nuisance, houseflies are a health hazard. They carry more than 100 different pathogens—yep, everything from bacteria and fungi to viruses and parasites. Experts say they can spread around 65 diseases, some of which can cause food poisoning. And as soon as the temperatures climb, these critters snap out of hibernation and start looking for cosy spots to lay eggs—which sadly makes your home the perfect target.

Chemical fly sprays might be the go-to for many, but they’re not pleasant. They can stink out your house and cost a fair bit over time. The good news? A far cheaper, natural alternative is sitting in your fridge right now.

DIY pro Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades has a simple trick that could keep your home fly-free without the hassle of chemicals. He said: “When it comes to keeping flies out of the home, many people turn to chemical solutions, but a simple, natural remedy can work wonders.

“Cucumber slices are a surprisingly effective way to repel flies. Flies hate the scent of cucumbers, particularly more bitter ones, so it’s a natural deterrent for flies.”

Yep, cucumber. Just slice one up and leave pieces near hotspots like your windowsills, doors, or anywhere flies love to hang out—like the bin area. Change them every few days to keep that scent nice and strong.

On top of that, it’s worth keeping windows and doors shut where possible, especially once the sun sets. Flies are drawn to light like moths to a flame, so turning off your outdoor lights and closing your blinds or curtains can stop them from seeing your living room as an open invitation.

And don’t forget the basics—your bins. Flies are obsessed with them, and they’re a prime spot for larvae to develop. Taking the bins out regularly and keeping them clean is a simple but super effective way to make your home less appealing to these pests.

So, while the sunshine is more than welcome, no one wants it bringing along a swarm of flies. Luckily, with a few natural tricks and some quick tidy-ups, you can enjoy the good weather without letting the bugs take over your home.
