Good Morning Britain Halts Live Broadcast as Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins Deliver Urgent Breaking News
0Good Morning Britain took a somber turn on Monday morning as hosts Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins interrupted their broadcast to share devastating breaking news. Reporter Marverine Cole delivered the tragic update that three foreign tourists had lost their lives in a fire at a backpacker hotel in Bangkok, reported by the Mirror.
The fatal blaze broke out on the fifth floor of the Ember Hotel, located on Bangkok’s bustling Khao San Road, a popular destination for travelers. The fire started just after 9 p.m. local time on December 29. While firefighters managed to control the flames by 10:30 p.m., the damage was already catastrophic. One victim died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to the hospital.
According to Thai media, the victims, including one woman, were overcome by smoke inhalation. The tragedy unfolded as 75 guests were staying in the hotel. While all were evacuated, seven individuals sustained injuries—two Thai nationals and five foreign tourists.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt expressed his condolences and highlighted the urgent need for heightened safety measures, especially with New Year’s Eve celebrations around the corner. The city is gearing up for countdown festivities, with fireworks and parties expected to draw massive crowds.
Fire crews arrived on the scene at 9:26 p.m. and immediately began rescue efforts. “The fire was on the fifth floor,” a brigade spokesperson stated. “There were two people trapped in a room. One was a male and the other a female. Hotel staff helped 40 people from the roof of the building, and fire crews entered to extinguish the fire. Smoke was filling all of the top floors.”
The Ember Hotel, situated in one of Bangkok’s most vibrant areas, is a popular choice for budget travelers, with rooms available for as little as 200 Thai baht (£4.68). Known for its nightlife and backpacker-friendly atmosphere, Khao San Road typically attracts millions of visitors annually.
Authorities are now investigating the cause of the blaze, as questions about the building’s safety standards come to the forefront. This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and vigilance in high-density tourist areas.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over the city’s preparations for New Year celebrations, leaving a community mourning the loss of lives in what should have been a season of joy.
