Controversial History of Funeral Home Under Police Scrutiny

Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, currently embroiled in a disturbing police investigation in Hull, is housed in a building with a notorious past, once home to the controversial Heavenly Services. Humberside Police’s discovery of 35 bodies and a significant amount of human ashes at the Hessle Road location has sent shockwaves through the community, leading to an outpouring of distress from bereaved families uncertain about the final resting places of their loved ones.

The investigation has led to the arrest and subsequent bail of two individuals, a 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, on charges related to improper burial practices and fraud. The unfolding scandal has reignited concerns over the funeral industry’s lack of regulation, with over 1,000 calls flooding the dedicated helpline established by the police for affected families.

This isn’t the first time the premises have been at the center of controversy. Previously operated as Heavenly Services, the funeral home was known for its affordable services before being caught in a similar police probe, which was later abandoned following the death of its director, Simon Woolston reported Hull daily Mail.

The financial history of Legacy, as revealed through Companies House records, shows a pattern of financial instability, with multiple warnings for potential strike-offs due to overdue accounts. Despite fluctuating turnovers and a substantial COVID business support grant, the company’s financial health appeared to deteriorate, culminating in a notice for compulsory strike-off.

Former clients of Heavenly Services have come forward with unsettling stories, from double-booked wakes to misidentified bodies, raising further questions about the operations conducted at the Hessle Road site. The lack of regulation in the funeral industry has been highlighted as a pressing concern, with calls for immediate governmental action to prevent future tragedies.

As the investigation continues, the community remains in shock, grappling with the revelations about a trusted local funeral home. The case underscores the urgent need for oversight in the funeral sector to ensure dignity in death and peace of mind for grieving families.
