Mum wants their daughter who went blind at 16 months old to live

In an inspiring show of determination, Bridie Starr, a 36-year-old intensive care nurse from Colchester, is gearing up to tackle the TCS London Marathon. This challenging endeavor isn’t just a test of endurance for Bridie; it’s a heartfelt tribute to her 3-year-old daughter, Mia, who tragically lost her sight at just 16 months old due to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow along nerves.

The diagnosis came after Mia suddenly lost her vision, leading to a harrowing 18-month battle with chemotherapy. Driven by a deep desire for Mia to live a life devoid of barriers and filled with the same experiences as others, Bridie, alongside her sister Cheryl Starr, 42, from Hockley, has committed to the 26.2-mile run on April 21, told Colchester Evening Gazette.

Their efforts are dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), a leading charity focused on eliminating the obstacles faced by those with sight loss. So far, the sisters have collectively amassed over £4,300 in donations, a testament to their commitment and the community’s support. Chris Perrin, from RNIB, highlights the significance of their contribution, emphasizing how the funds will aid in supporting the estimated two million individuals living with sight loss across the UK.
