Inspirational Cumbria Mums Release Powerful Children’s Books on Neurodivergence

Chrissie Hadfield and Anouska Wardale, the founders of Juvenis Books, are turning their extensive backgrounds in children’s residential care, education, and charity work into a groundbreaking venture. Drawing on their own experiences of neurodivergence as well as their work with Kirby Stephen Youth Centre and Reggie’s Cause, the dynamic duo is determined to help children navigate life’s challenges through engaging stories and interactive tools.

The pair explained that their inspiration came from witnessing firsthand the struggles that many children face. “We have seen firsthand how many children struggle with emotional regulation, inclusion, education, and hospital stays. That’s why we created Juvenis Books—a company dedicated to teaching real-life issues in a fun and accessible way.”

They continued by emphasizing their personal commitment to making a difference: “We’re two mums who just want to make a difference, helping children learn about emotions, friendship, and resilience in a way that feels fun and natural. We believe in teaching real-life issues through engaging stories and interactive tools”, reported by Westmorland Gazette.

Their inaugural book, Bobby the Cat, sets the tone for what Juvenis Books aims to achieve. “Our first book, Bobby the Cat, follows a tree-dwelling cat, a bird, and a bee, an unlikely trio whose friendship is questioned by others. But Bobby teaches them an important lesson: true friendship is about kindness, not appearances.” The book is designed not only to entertain but also to encourage young readers to discuss important themes.

“Bobby the Cat is designed to spark conversations about diversity, inclusion, and empathy, helping children understand that differences should be celebrated, not feared.” Looking to build on this success, Hadfield and Wardale are set to introduce their next character, Barnaby the Bee. Barnaby, who has Autism, will take young readers on a journey that explores sensory sensitivities, communication differences, and the importance of acceptance.

This new story promises to foster greater understanding and inclusivity among children, broadening the horizons opened by their first publication. Alongside their books, the founders have developed practical tools aimed at easing the emotional and sensory challenges children face, especially during hospital stays.

They added: “Inspired by personal experiences, this interactive book helps children facing medical treatment by giving them a space to express emotions, track their journey, and alleviate boredom just long waits and stays in hospital. Along with books about Reggie’s story, a way to raise awareness for organ donation and for children with severe medical conditions to relate and feel less alone, in a world filled with uncertainty.

“Our Regemo Boxes provide sensory and emotional regulation toolkits designed for children with Autism, ADHD, anxiety, and sensory processing challenges. Filled with fidget tools, calming aids, and self-regulation strategies, these kits are used in schools, homes, and hospitals to help children feel safe and in control.”

With Juvenis Books, Hadfield and Wardale hope to empower children by addressing real-life issues in a relatable and supportive manner. Their innovative blend of storytelling and practical resources is set to spark meaningful conversations, encourage emotional well-being, and foster a more inclusive environment for the next generation.
