Carol Kirkwood Expresses “Real Disappointment” Over Strictly Come Dancing Controversy

BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood has voiced her shock and “real disappointment” regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding Strictly Come Dancing. Professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima have been removed from the show amid allegations of misconduct during rehearsals. A legal investigation is underway following accusations by Amanda Abbington that Giovanni bullied and humiliated her during training, allegations he denies.

Graziano, who was confirmed to return for the show’s special anniversary series, was also dropped. Graziano later admitted to kicking his dance partner Zara McDermott but refuted claims that he spat at her. When asked about the unfolding drama, 62-year-old Carol, who appeared on the show in 2015, shared her views. “Yes [I’m surprised], I’m really disappointed as well. They’re doing the right thing by investigating all these claims,” the weather presenter said.

She fondly recalled her time on the show with her “lovely” dance partner Pasha Kovalev, stating she didn’t witness or hear about any issues from her fellow contestants at the time. Carol also admitted that she no longer watches the show religiously since her stint on it, as per Daily Express.

“I know too much and I know what they’re going through with the nerves,” she explained. “When you come down the stairs as the program opens, obviously you’re waiting behind the stairs to go up them. That is nerve-racking. You’re looking for the nearest fire escape to get out of there because you’re consumed by nerves, so I haven’t watched it for a long time.”

A BBC spokesperson has revealed that this season’s celebrity dancers will be provided with chaperones during all practices to supervise the coaching sessions. Commenting on the new measure, Carol praised the move, saying it’s “really good” that the BBC is taking note and “looking into” the matter.

While speaking on the Off Air… with Jane and Fi podcast, she reminisced: “I loved it. I found the Saturday evening absolutely nerve-racking, but the experience, especially the training with Pasha, was my favorite bit. He was so patient, so kind. I would say, ‘I can’t do this,’ and he’d say, ‘Tomorrow you’ll be able to.’ He was lovely to me, so I’ve got absolutely no complaints whatsoever. I will never forget it, and I don’t regret doing it.”

As anticipation builds, seven celebrities have so far been unveiled for the next season. Those setting their sights on the coveted Glitterball trophy include Go Compare’s Wynne Evans, singer and actor Toyah Willcox, TV personality Dr. Punam Krishan, stand-up comedian Chris McCausland, JLS heartthrob JB Gill, TOWIE’s Pete Wicks, and Love Island sensation Tasha Ghouri.
