Kay Burley and Richard Tice in Heated Showdown Over Trump’s Tariffs

In a fiery exchange on Sky News this morning, Good Morning Britain’s Kay Burley and Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice engaged in a heated debate over US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Mexico and Canada, with both sides clashing over the future of international trade. The discussion came as Trump announced plans to impose huge taxes on imports from the two nations, arguing that they are not doing enough to curb the flow of drugs and immigrants into the United States.

He further hinted that tariffs on the EU would follow “pretty soon”, although he suggested that the UK might be spared. Experts have warned that such measures could spark an international trade war, potentially throwing the global economy into chaos, reported by Huffington Post.

During the segment, Burley grilled Tice about his views on Trump’s tough stance. “But what about these tariffs? Do you agree with the tariffs that he’s suggesting?” she asked. Tice responded by downplaying the idea of tariffs as punitive measures, stating, “At the end of the day, tariffs are used as a negotiating tool.”

When pressed further by Burley with, “But do you agree with them or not?”, Tice sidestepped the question. He remarked, “The prime minister’s job is to negotiate for Britain. Put Britain center stage rather than giving all our money to overseas nations like Mauritius on the Chagos deal.”

Not willing to let the topic drop, Burley attempted to steer the conversation back, saying, “I’m going to have to row you back to the question. You’re all over the place this morning. What about the tariffs? Good idea, bad idea? So you think he’s bluffing.”

Tice defended Trump’s position by stating, “He’s not bluffing at all, but it’s a negotiation. Very often with a negotiation you don’t end up where you start. That’s how negotiations work. The more we have smart businesspeople coming in to politics and negotiating on behalf of Britain, the better, rather than just rolling over and giving all our money away like this prime minister.”

When Burley inquired about the impact these tariffs might have on the global economy, Tice fired back, “You’re clearly not interested in what’s happening in the UK, I am. I’m negotiating on behalf of British citizens.” In response, Burley challenged his assertion by saying, “Why do you say that? I’ve lived in this country a lot longer than you.”

Tice then pivoted the focus back to domestic issues, arguing, “Let’s focus on what’s going on in Britain, not what’s going on in Mexico and Canada. That’s what’s of real interest to us. We’ve got to get this economy growing by cutting out regulation, stop sending our money overseas, scrap net zero.”

Burley interrupted once more with a pointed question: “Are you supporting massive tariffs or not?” Tice reiterated his stance, “Tariffs are a negotiation. I’ve said that. You seem to be focusing on Mexico and Canada, I’m focusing on the UK. Let’s focus on what makes British citizens better off – you’re not interested in that.” Laughing, Burley retorted, “You talk rubbish sometimes.”

Tice then countered by suggesting the UK should concentrate on improving trade with the US rather than the “failing, recessionary EU”. When Burley pointed out that the EU was Britain’s biggest trading partner, Tice dismissed the criticism, noting, “And it’s powerhouse of that trading bloc [Germany] is in recession for the third year – you seem incapable of registering that point.” Laughing once again, Burley concluded the exchange with, “It’s good to see you, as always.”
